Tell people about your need and why you’re making the ask

Sharing your story of why you or your loved ones need medical funding is one of the core steps for successfully receiving support. Based on our data, campaigns with well-written stories and images receive 21% more than the ones without.

Crafting a well-written story doesn’t mean being a professional writer. It means sharing a comfortable amount of details about why you need medical funding and how your supporter’s contribution is going to impact your quality of life.

To simplify the process, here are the questions that will help you write the story:

Describe the medical condition and its impact on your life. Any healthcare issue is often associated not only with physical but also emotional and mental pain. Explain your challenge and how it is impacting your quality of life.
What is the remedy you are raising funds for and how can it solve the problem?
What do your medical professionals say about this remedy? How do you see it working for you?
Be specific about how your life will change. What is it that you would like to do that you currently can’t? Or want to get back to doing that you no longer can?
Describe the use of funds. Your community will be more willing to support you if they know how their funds will be distributed and used. You can break it into treatment costs, travel costs and additional expenses if they are any.

Make sure you have a clear demonstration of your identity such as your name and profile picture. If you are raising money on behalf of someone else, describe your affiliation and how you know the beneficiary. This will build stronger trust among the second-level community (friends of friends, work colleagues and distant relatives) and increase the chances for them to contribute to your campaign.

How to get over the fear of asking for money

It is normal to feel shy, embarrassed or even afraid to ask for money. Most people do and it is a very human thing to experience this spectrum of emotions. Here are a few things you can do to overcome these feelings:

1

Shift your mindset

The fear of asking for money is very much tied with the fear of not having enough. We often fear that if we ask for money then we’ll be rejected. Adam Smith, an 18th-century economist and philosopher assures us that everybody who has ever had money has also had at some point money problems of their own. Healthcare issues are never something you can fully budget and plan ahead for. Your community knows that too.
2

There is a real need

There’s a significant difference between asking for money for things and asking for a health related need. Your good health is the most important and critical type of support your community can give you. Be more comfortable and confident about asking.
3

Embrace your emotions

You or your loved ones deserve the gift of health and well-being. Be confident about asking for this meaningful support - it is a life-changing need that can significantly influence your quality of life. It is okay to be emotional and vulnerable - walking the healthcare journey isn’t easy.

Financial Goal

Setting a realistic goal is another factor for your success. Taking into account the cost of treatment as well as additional, often hidden, expenses will help you understand how much money you should ask for. Providing a breakdown of the goal in the story will help your community understand the scope of treatment.

Timeline and Milestones

Some treatments require extreme urgency (ex: cancer care) while others have a defined schedule or longer time for care. If you explain to your community how urgent or time-sensitive the project is and what you may need at different points of your health journey, it will increase the chances of a successful outcome.

Reach out and engage your community

If the campaign story is written, the goal and timeline are set, payment processing is connected (PayPal or Stripe), then the campaign is ready to be launched. Here are a few tips for the best healthcare crowdfunding results:

Turn on or turn off Public Visibility

You can decide if you want the campaign to be publicly visible (when someone searches on Google, it will show up) or keep it private from public search (you can learn how to set public visibility here).

Start socializing the crowdfunding project before launching

Don’t wait until your campaign is ready to announce it to your circle. Some people need a few days to organize their finances and prepare money for supporting your campaign.

Encourage your circle to spread the word

Ask your community to spread the word about your campaign with their circle of friends too. They can always add their own message to it or just share it as is.  Our stats show that every share is equal on average to $30!

Share your campaign publicly or privately

Depending on your preference, you can share your campaign via public social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc) or Private (Messenger, WhatsApp, Email). CoCoPay has the most extensive and flexible social sharing capabilities, so your campaign can reach as many people as possible via the channels you prefer.

Share the campaign as frequently as possible

The common misconception is that people believe that sharing once or twice is enough. Your community needs to hear from you as frequently as possible to stay in touch and pay attention. It can be from 3-4 times a week for less urgent campaigns to twice a day for urgent ones.

Reach out to the closest circle individually

Make sure to personalize your message and connect directly with people you know you can count on personally.

Write frequent updates about your health journey

Publishing frequent updates, as well as milestones in your health journey, is one of the best-kept secrets of successful crowdfunding. Based on our research of more than 200,000 crowdfunding campaigns, campaigns that write at least 3 updates are 33% more likely to meet or exceed their goal.

CoCoPay provides amazing functionality for your updates. You can publish one instantly or schedule it for another time. As soon as it is published, the platform will automatically notify people who supported or subscribed to your project.

Types of updates you can write:

  • Progress on your treatment
  • News or updates from the clinic
  • How you feel physically or mentally
  • Progress on the funds collected
  • Milestones of the campaign
  • How many days left for the campaign
  • How much money is remaining to be raised

Remember, your family and friends care about you. They want to help, but often don’t know how. With CoCoPay you can give them an opportunity to be part of your health journey toward better living.
