Supporting Garett & Sophie on Their Healing Journey

On June 3, 2024, my sister Sophie and her partner, Garett’s world was turned upside down when Garett was diagnosed with advanced stage 4 colon cancer. At just 49 years old, Garett has become not only Sophie’s partner and our friend of 35+ years, but also fun-loving stepdad to Sophie’s four kids, who think the world of him. The past six months have been a whirlwind of treatments, tough decisions, and a relentless fight for Garett’s life.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy, the results so far haven’t been as promising as we all hoped. Garett and Sophie are now looking beyond conventional treatments to include alternative therapies and natural healing methods. This path offers hope but comes with many challenges—financial, emotional, and physical.

Sophie is Garett’s primary caregiver, which means she’s had to take extensive time off work. They also commute over four hours regularly for Garett’s medical appointments and treatments. The financial burden has grown overwhelming as they navigate the costs of care, travel, and new therapies.

This is where we are reaching out for help.

As many of you know, in 2015, I experienced my own life-changing event when I sustained a spinal cord injury. During that time, my husband’s work community came together and created a fundraising campaign for us. The generosity of friends, family, and colleagues lifted a massive weight off our shoulders, allowing us to focus on my recovery. To this day, we feel deep gratitude for the kindness that supported us during one of the hardest times in our lives.

Now, we have the opportunity to pay it forward.
