About Sonia's Need for a New Chair

I have setup this fundraiser to raise funds to purchase a new transportable power wheelchair for my friend Sonia. Sonia has cerebral palsy, and depends on her chair, almost every waking hour of her life.

There are several issues with her current chair. Pieces on it constantly break and require repair. It is very heavy, limiting car travel to only people who can lift the chair. The foot rests flip up to the side which present a tripping issue so Sonia forgoes them; not having footrests is slowly causing leg circulation issues. And the low end model chair is not very comfortable.

I am looking to raise money for a new, more durable, lighter, chair which has a foot rest that folds under. A new more comfortable chair fitting that criteria would significantly raise Sonia's quality of life.

The transportable chair that I am looking is $2500 plus tax. It is half the weight. Looks way more well built than her current chair, and has a foot rest that folds under. I am seeking $3000 for this fundraiser to cover the chair, tax, as well as fundraising expenses.

About Sonia

I first met Sonia here in Phoenix as a roommate at a month-to-month rental. I quickly found that Sonia is one of the kindest, sweetest and strongest people I have ever met.

Here in Phoenix, Sonia doesn't have a great support system. She is gay and was kicked out of her very religiously conservative parent's home, after coming out. She moved here from California with only her chair and two backpacks of belongings. Myself, and a few others who Sonia has met here, do our best to help where we can because she is such a great person and great friend, but there is only so much we can do, and the current power chair limits Sonia and us in many ways.
