My Story: A Path of Struggle for Dignity and Hope
I was born on May 1, 1993, into a humble family from the countryside. From a young age, my parents noticed something unusual about the way I walked. At 3, I was referred to Exequiel González Cortés Hospital and eventually entered Teletón, where, after numerous tests, I was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4C, a degenerative disease that affects nerves and internal organs, similar to ALS. Doctors thought my life would be short, but here I am, fighting every day.
Throughout my childhood, I endured painful experiences of bullying and harassment due to my disability, situations that damaged my self-esteem and left me with deep emotional scars. No one intervened, not even my teachers. I endured all of this in silence, never telling my parents because I didn’t want to be a burden, although inside I was suffering in ways I couldn’t explain.
As the years passed, life kept hitting us. In 2008, my father passed away, leaving my mother alone to raise my younger siblings and me as my health continued to worsen. I battled inherited depression and grew up with panic attacks, watching my physical abilities slowly deteriorate. In 2019, my health complications increased, and in 2021 an undetected infection landed me in the ICU. The sepsis damaged my pancreas, causing diabetes. I survived, but now I rely on a bladder catheter, which causes constant infections, and urgently need a bladder surgery called urostomy.
I’ve done everything possible to keep going, but the healthcare system closed its doors on me, denying me the support I need because, according to them, my family’s income is “sufficient,” even though it barely covers a fraction of my medical expenses. My loved ones have made enormous sacrifices and taken on debt to save my life, but it’s still not enough.
Today, bedridden and carrying trauma from medical negligence, I only wish to live with dignity. I’ve lost my independence, and although I need special transportation for mobility and emergencies, the car I have is in poor condition, falling apart. Despite all the suicide attempts and the pain, I still love life. I enjoy painting and writing, and I still dream of being functional and living my days with dignity.
Your support could give me the chance to regain some independence and live with fewer limitations. Thank you for reading my story and considering joining me on this journey toward a better life.
